At the beginning of the Columbus Day morning in 2014, Facebook was flooded with Columbus Day bashing, making the Holiday more an anti-Holiday. It has been polled that it is more American custom to bash Columbus Day, than to celebrate it.
"As a regular guy growing up here in Texas, Columbus Day was never a big thing to celebrate. I mean I never saw a gift being given, or a card, or even a good word saying "Happy Columbus Day" to another. Theres more messages not to celebrate it now, than messages to celebrate it. In fact, if it wasn't for its celebration in outdated public school second hand education, then I don't think there would be an issue to counter-attack the holiday."
"Heres what I get from the whole education of it, he was simply a bad guy to give a Holiday too. Saints don't regularly get American holidays [except St. Patrick's Day], Einstein doesn't get a holiday, lots of important people don't get holidays. So why would anyone give him one. Maybe it's fate though since now his Holiday has back-fired, making him targeted long after his death. Seems better to be forgotten than your memory be bashed"
"Columbus didn't land in America, he was completely lost, he was looking for India Asia, Thats why they still call Native Americans "Indians". America was also called for a time the west Indies. So how can he be given an "AMERICAN HOLIDAY" when he landed in the Dominican Republic."
"According to several histories, this man was a kidnapper, a slave trader, which allows room to imagine much more when it comes to the sanctity of women. The Spanish-Portuguese were only middle-man shippers to an older slave-market, a market that eyed them a few times. So what it seems they did was land on an island, at which time they had brought disease from being a bathless culture, making the population sick. Instead of helping the people they had infected, they continued at trying to make money."
The trend on Columbus Day Bashing looks to continue with 2015. Since history has continued to reveal several unfavored points in Catholic history, the number of Anti-Columbus Day celebrators has grown since the year 2000. Possibly one day the Holiday will either be denounced or it will just remain a day to reflect on criminal acts.
