We didnt miss 4th of JULY: We were just too busy celebrating!

Readers were asking if T.M.BW. missed the 4th of JULY since there wasn't a post, but that was not the case. Our team celebrated the 4th of JULY with friends and family. Some celebrated having BBQ's, some spending it at the swimming pool getting tanned, some spent the day online and watched the Presidential speech while relaxing with a beer.

"At least give a moment to think about the GOOD things that have been brought with the founding of this place. There are many many things to still work on, honored relationships with other nations and Native Tribes, we must become much more aware of our political actions. Make Peace, so we can grow as a peaceful nation."

T.M.BW. wishes everyone a safe and happy week. May the rest of the year be a productive one.

A Polynesian Peace & Unity month for Samoans and Tongans: The Asia Pacific Month of May

 TokoUso Unity Movement beginning in
the 1990s which then moved online in 2008

Although the Month of May is actually Asia Pacific and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States, another hopeful celebration is a "Peace and Unity month", focused purely on Samoans and Tongans. Elders of both Polynesian communities have attempted at bringing youth together in areas like The United States, Aotearoa New Zealand, and Australia, and for the most part the efforts have kept youth from joining gangs which frequently use misinformation as an excuse to street brawl.

Organization of the newer Peace and Unity month has yet to take hold, but is foreseen to connect with other movements like the #TOKOUSO online movement that was started in the late 1990s around DFW Texas and spreading to Utah.

"There are so many half Samoan-Tongans, Samoan-Chinese, Samoan-Maori, Samoan-Kiwi, Samoan-German, Samoan-American, Samoan-Hawaiian, Samoan-Fijian, Samoan-Japanese today and they often feel they have to choose a side. They need a monthly time to celebrate just being themselves. The month of May (Asia Pacific and Pacific Islander Heritage Month) might give some grace, a way for them to know that communities respect them"

Asia Pacific & Pacific Islander Heritage Month of May
May is officially by the United States Government, Asia Pacific and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month – A celebration of Asia Pacific and Pacific Islanders in the United States that encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia), and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Western Samoa, Eastern Samoan or American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, Eastern Polynesia or French Polynesia and Rapa Nui)

Like most commemorative months, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month originated with Congress. In 1977 Reps. Frank Horton of New York introduced House Joint Resolution 540 to proclaim the first ten days in May as Pacific Asian American Heritage Week. In the same year, Senator Daniel Inouye introduced a similar resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 72. Neither of these resolutions passed, so in June 1978, Rep. Horton introduced House Joint Resolution 1007. This resolution proposed that the President should proclaim a week, which is to include the seventh and tenth of the month, during the first ten days in May of 1979 as ‘Asian Pacific American Heritage Week.’

This joint resolution was passed by the House, and then the Senate, and was signed by President Jimmy Carter on October 5, 1978 to become Public Law 95-419. This law amended the original language of the bill and directed the President to issue a proclamation for the “7 day period beginning on May 4, 1979 as ‘Asian Pacific American Heritage Week."

During the next decade, United States Presidents passed annual proclamations for Asian Pacific American Heritage Week until 1990 when Congress passed Public Law 101-283 which expanded the observance to an entire month for 1990. Then in 1992, Congress passed Public Law 102-450, which annually designated May as Asia Pacific & Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. God Bless America.

Celebrating Christmas with decorations in Polynesian style

The Holiday seasons have started, and this year putting up the Christmas tree a bit earlier than Thanksgiving seems to be ok.

Many Aiga Americans put up the Christmas tree during the Thanksgiving dinner, but that American shared tradition this year might be over turned. People want to get the seasonal happy spirits going! The year has been a very long one according to some community, and everyone deserves a good vacation, a few extra dinners out, and better thought out gifts this year.

We also started a few new types of decorations on the Christmas tree as well. The Christmas tree got it’s first Aloha make-over. We started thinking about decorations that could be made or used from the island and found that "Leis" work well. We gathered all the Leis that we could find around the house and even made a few new Aloha decorations of our own. We found Ocean Shell Leis, Kuikui nut shell Leis, Flower Leis, all work great and we strung them across the Christmas tree, calling it our "Aloha Christmas Tree" look.

The Christmas tree looks better than ever this year. If you decide to do a few projects with decorations, we found that Hobby Lobby has some great prices with a variety of project items. Instead of cutting out snow flakes this year on colored or white paper, this year round out the design and cut out flower patterned designs. A glue stick with some sprinkles can make a nice Christmas effect on the Aloha flower patterns.

Small decorated paper frames can be made for little family photos and hung on the tree . The best part about the whole thing is it gave us so many more ideas that we can try next year. We swore we’d try and deck it out even more lavishly next year, and take more photos . Maybe even design, produce, and sell some online to others who want that Aloha Christmas tree look.

◘ Health Interests

#1 tip Trust in Medical help has lowered since year 2000, especially when it comes to Cancer Treatments. Promises unkept for cures and breakthroughs in new research never applied, or with poor results, for over 40 years has raised skepticism. Following the most advanced tech nations instead of relying on easy access convenient hospitalization has been recommended for those looking for better medical help.

#1 tipA Community report says to "Beware of TAP WATER" [Tap Water can be Dangerous]. Outside the island, there are industrialized cities with real toxic issues. On the surface the City may have great rides, food, highways, and parks, but have under it all "toxic or environmental health issues" due to old Landfills and Water Infrastructure being ignored. If an area has a waste smell, the ground nearby could be a covered over Landfill where a town has expanded, buried the old one, and moved to a new location. Buying clean bottled water is an important choice, and will save a person's health.
◘ Community Interests

#1 tipPacific Islander American Community report on "Banking Overdraft Schemes" which resequence transactions on lower income accounts to make the accounts overdraft. In the Banking Scheme, transactions are being posted in an order that benefits the banking fees, and costing the customer possibly hundreds of dollars. The Banking Overdraft Schemes have been reported to still be attempted. Keep your money in a trusted Bank. Do not just sign up to any bank.

#1 tip Check out your local Library for community events. Also a Library can subscribe to Polynesian Newspapers and Magazines so that you and your kids can read them. Organizing a way to have books and media content (movies and news) able for your community to check out is important. Organize your local Library on how to get things started. Classes in public school are also being asked by local community for more Pacific languages and culture to be taught.
