I've heard some variations of this Native American tribe. I can see online it's spelled a certain way, but the way it sounds doesn't seem to match the Wikipedia spelling, maybe someone said it wrong and my ears heard different. The name "Iroquios", seems to not even be their real name, so apparently there have been some historical mix-ups through-out the last 500 years.
It's theorized the Catholics who came up with the name Iroquis, Hiroquis, Yiroquis, had compared the Native Americans to Middle Easterners (Iraq people), the same as the Spanish Catholic trader Columbus had thought he was in India-Asia (calling them Indians), when really he was lost in the Caribbean. The early educational guesses of scholarly Catholics must have thought the Native Americans had some very old related links to Muslims, simply because of skin tone and knowing that Muslim people were wide spread.
