The Samoan Slap Games: still viral after 2008 and 2011? Some are still playing in 2020

The name of the game is "The Samoan Slap Game", a viral Youtube trend played by Samoan youth, with the main objective to "not to get mad or laugh" and have some fun. The Youtube trend started in 2008 until 2011, either within the homelands of Samoa, or in Samoan community in Auckland New Zealand, and was popular enough that pacific communities in five surrounding nations joined in and began making their own slap videos.

How to play Samoan Slap Game
All players start with a gulp of water inside their mouth about half a mouth full. The players then face each other and take about 30 seconds to a minute to get their slapping game on focus.

During the short focus period of starring at the opponent, one can make funny faces to make the other lose immediately, but might end up laughing themselves. Ugliest person is supposed to start the slapping first, or just start when the video-cam person says to begin. Next comes the slapping fun. Slapping combinations can be apart of the game. If you can come up with a combo play of slaps in a series, then you're more likely to make the other player laugh, or trigger his Samoan side to be more competitive. The game is funny to Samoans because slapping in the face is usually a fast trigger to a fight, but in this game, you'll lose, if you lose your cool. No punching - No tickling.

The viewers can not make the players laugh. Once the player opens their mouth and spits water from laughing or becoming mad, they're out. Most of the time it's played between 2 players but 3 is better. First player to get up to 2 wins, wins the game. This game started around 2011. [Samoan Slap Game video1]

"This is probably a great thing for sports kids to play around with, because in American style Football and Rugby, if you can't keep your cool during the game, which can be very physically intense, then you're not going to get very far"

The Samoan Mega-slap Game
There is another Samoan slap game that became viral in 2008, popular name being called "Samoa Mega-slap", and is NOT to be confused with the other friendly slap game. The Samoan Mega-slap is when a person surprises a target with a huge "Mega-slap", and posts the reaction online.

Sometimes the Mega-slap target is playing games, or sleeping, or doing work, or playing on the internet. The point is to get the Mega-slap on video so people can have a laugh. There's a larger chance of someone getting really really mad in this game, but the game keeps going when the target gets 'revenge', posting the revenge slap online. It's strongly recommended that this Samoa Mega-slap game be played with people that know and love the other players, otherwise it could be taken the wrong way and could lead to other big problems. The Slap-Fight Championship - Youtube Channel
After some videos went viral in 2008-2011, someone took the playful 'kids game' to a strange and violent new level and began a Slap-Fight Championship, which to many people seems a bit extreme, but it's Youtube. The Slap-Fight Championship still seems to be going on in 2020. A young Hawaiian man is said to be a major player and continues to take on some serious heat from competitors, while giving more heat back. His Slap-Fight nickname is "Da Crazy Hawaiian" and recently known as "The Sleeper".  [Slap-Fight Championship video1, video2]

DC's James Wan, Zachary Edward Snyder, and Jason Momoa's Aquaman dominated the Christmas BOX OFFICE, crushing DC's old works of "The Dark Knight Rises" by Christapher Nolan. Aquaman is currently the number #1 movie in the world.

"The Reviews are in and most who are not on the payroll of opposing views, say its a fun adventure and well worth the watch. The Comic Master who played Silent BOB in the 1990s, gives the movie a thumbs up."

The new Marry Poppins movie struggled to make headlines, mostly because fans remained loyal to the original Julie Andrews classic. Public Critics say the new version just makes the original look even better.

Australia's Got Talent: Angel Tupai 2012 - Samoan Singer

Angel Tupai on Australia's Got Talent

Samoan Australian singer Angel Tupai earned a spotlight to sing at Australia's Got Talent. It was an amazing performance and with her being so young, there could be a real future in her singing career if she so wishes it. As of now Angel Tupai is a music teacher and singing coach and lives a humble life with her family.

"She became more famous in Aussie when she went on the X Factor, blowing people away with every song. Someone might have to build a jail around her to keep her from taking over"

"It's very easy to find her on the Youtube. I just watched some of her earlier works while she was in musical Arts School"

"I know they had to make a story to promote the show, dress her bad, and make it look like they brought her up from nothing, but it got pretty ridiculous there with the costumes and hair wraps"

JGeeks represented Maori and Polynesian in the semi-finals of New Zealand's Got Talent

The group JGeeks "represented" Aotearoa - New Zealand, which is the best word to describe their second performance, starting it off with a Haka in dance. The first time the Maori group appeared it was just  refreshing to see them on stage and see what they'd perform. They didn't disappoint in the entertainment area first time around, with the surrounding stage audience cheering as if they were at a national Rugby game.

"What's special about JGeeks is their fearlessness to express. In Polynesia we often find ourselves in a traditional trance. Polynesian culture and Fine Arts are hard to distinguish at times, and JGeeks musical art breaks ice. There are other Maori and Polynesians who today attempt to do the same, to be grounded yet also expand"

Their singing talent has been already established with several song hits able to be seen online. The songs even spawned a few tribute vids, one being a Maori girl group who do a great dance-and-kick with the lyrics.

One of the discussions online about JGeeks winning the contest was that they were already a bit famous, before appearing in the contest, this though didn't stop fans from wanting to see them actually win. With the talent from Tawaroa Kawana, Mihirangi, and the JGeeks, it looks like it was Maori talent in the running for the win anyway. All in all, a great show.

American Samoa and Tonga American eating competitions

In a discussion by some of the local Euless Polynesian community, most said they wanted to see what happens when teams of hungry Samoans and Tongans get their hands in an eating competition.

First questions were "Where are they, how do we create an eating competition"? Another was, "Where would a good place be to hold an eating competition"? All agreed in discussion that it needs to happen sooner or later. It would be possibly an event for mature viewers only, considering what happens when a Samoan gets down to hungry moments!!

Holding an event like this seems best at a Local Fair or community gathering so that consumers and businesses can take a look see. One thing to do would be to get funding support for the event by allowing businesses to put they're names on a large sign, usually posted right above and around the contest.

If someone in the community is to host an eating competition like the one discussed, they'll need a panel of judges, and a prize, [doesn't have to be a great prize if the event is really fun, usually eating great food is considered in part a reward] and there can be a small charge but fair entry fee for food costs. Something fair cost like Hot Dogs, Chicken wings, or Pies, maybe best for the food competition. Rules would have to be setup, including rules involving small things like disqualification if you can not hold the food down. Making sure a contestant signs that he or she takes responsibility for their health might have to be looked into. A good idea would be to get all food ready the day before so to be fresh fresh fresh........and then they could host away!

The following year or event people can try new ideas, new foods, new prizes, more room for contestants, and maybe have some other forms of entertainment to make a longer event. One thing is for sure, if there is an event like it soon, it will surely be posted in The Manaia Blog-writer event section.

◘ Health Interests

#1 tip Trust in Medical help has lowered since year 2000, especially when it comes to Cancer Treatments. Promises unkept for cures and breakthroughs in new research never applied, or with poor results, for over 40 years has raised skepticism. Following the most advanced tech nations instead of relying on easy access convenient hospitalization has been recommended for those looking for better medical help.

#1 tipA Community report says to "Beware of TAP WATER" [Tap Water can be Dangerous]. Outside the island, there are industrialized cities with real toxic issues. On the surface the City may have great rides, food, highways, and parks, but have under it all "toxic or environmental health issues" due to old Landfills and Water Infrastructure being ignored. If an area has a waste smell, the ground nearby could be a covered over Landfill where a town has expanded, buried the old one, and moved to a new location. Buying clean bottled water is an important choice, and will save a person's health.
◘ Community Interests

#1 tipPacific Islander American Community report on "Banking Overdraft Schemes" which resequence transactions on lower income accounts to make the accounts overdraft. In the Banking Scheme, transactions are being posted in an order that benefits the banking fees, and costing the customer possibly hundreds of dollars. The Banking Overdraft Schemes have been reported to still be attempted. Keep your money in a trusted Bank. Do not just sign up to any bank.

#1 tip Check out your local Library for community events. Also a Library can subscribe to Polynesian Newspapers and Magazines so that you and your kids can read them. Organizing a way to have books and media content (movies and news) able for your community to check out is important. Organize your local Library on how to get things started. Classes in public school are also being asked by local community for more Pacific languages and culture to be taught.
