On Sunday 17th, June in the first 12 minutes of the Pacific Nations Cup final match, Japan had a consistent offense against Samoa taking a lead up to 0-6 in the first half. Then after the first 30 minutes in, Japan leaded 0-16 with Samoa in under 15 minutes later, starting to flex their muscles and was only 2 points behind, with Kahn Fotuali'i scoring the first try and making headway for the second.
Samoa then was in the lead by 1 pt. after team ramming the ball down Japan's middle and making a try and with Ki Anufe following through with a kick in. The score then 17-16 in favor of Samoa, at the 43rd minute, 2nd half.
Logovi'i Mulipola of Manu Samoa had several full contact heavy hits, with one sending him carded aside for part of the 1st half, and the other at the 49th minute into the game. Alafoti Fa'osaliva at the 44th minute held up 5 of Japan's offense. At the 45th minute, Samoa went intense forcing the Japan forward pack to play their physical game.
Japan's well paced game countered the growing Samoa physical intensity with shifting the ball to the edges, and still jabbing the ball off and on inside. At an hour and 15 minutes in, Samoa mauled forward, instantly taking yards and bringing in the focus again to the forwarding strength. Then after patiently taking Japan's attention, Samoa flew a quick slip and pass. Faatiga Peapea-Lemalu of Samoa brought it in after the tactical passing making a try and bringing up the lead to 22-16 vs Japan.
Final score finishes at 27-26 with Ki Anufe accurately scoring Samoa's final points and winning against the defending champions of Japan. Manu Samoa left with the IRB Pacific Nations Cup 2012 in hand, an even more impressive run of games from their 2010 Pacific Nations Cup win.
