summary of Samoan History and the Cession of the Tui Manu'a
We recently reviewed a summary on American Samoa in Wikipedia trying to see what the cliff-notes version of Eastern Samoa was. At first it seemed pretty lay-back, very general information until the summary went into the more detailed history. I don't know what we were expecting since wikipedia history always seems to be twistedly wrong, but we didn't expect it to be so radically misleading.
When we entered the American Samoa Wikipedia history it said that "Eastern Samoa ceded to the USA in 1904", that Eastern Samoa signed a Treaty of Cession, and the wikipedia summary just left it at that, no explanation.
American Samoan Government has more than once proclaimed their status and has brought this issue to the United Nations regarding their special relations with the USA. The United Nations has supported decolonization since it's founding and helped gain Independence for 80 former nations in colonial status and for over 750 million people. Senator Magalei Logovi’i stated the word “Colony” continues to come up over the years and that this has also been the case in the previous administrations of former American Samoan Governors Tauese P.F. Sunia and Togiola Tulafono and that it is simply a continued annoyance says administrations. Tapa’au responded that he addressed the same to the UN Committee and that American Samoa should not be listed and simply wish to be left alone. The US. State Department’s answer to the UN committee, said - when it comes to American Samoan politics, this is an "Internal issue of the US government and not under the UN committee purview".
Council Samoan Politics before the 1900's
In Samoa titles do retire and the people have never incorporated a European-style monarch where the title system does have major differences. Samoa who has an ancient past has gone through many titles with entitlement reformed to take in votes.
Interpretation of Cession? or Deed of Cession?
A Cession which is an english word is interpreted as "retire" and has no relavance to Samoan lands or its surrounding ocean claims. Wikipedia authors have taken a single word like cession and used it to mislead the nature of the overall Trust regional proceedings. Wikipedia has also called it a "Deed of Cession" without producing an actual Deed and uses the photo of a Fijian Treaty as a false reference. False Deeds have in the past been used by Anglo-British in Aotearoa New Zealand to encourage and create unrest and in this case seems to be used as a means to attempt to undermine Eastern Samoan or American Samoa's history and political standing.
A reference was made in Wikipedia on the main summary of American Samoa using a book written by Dan Taulapapa McMullin 2005, an author who is New Zealand-Samoan and not acquainted with Eastern Samoa (American Samoa). He is also a transgender Artist and never claimed to be an absolute authority of Pacific History. The New Zealand Samoan author Albert Wendt has proclaimed to the public that he is a "Novelist". He too has never claimed to be an authority on Pacific History.
"Wikipedia seems to base most of its information off summary like those written online in Britannica Encyclopedia which is a foreign resource of information. Wikipedia mentions nothing about US. Colonel Steinberger , the H.M.S. Barracoutta ship affray, over the return of the US. Presidential Agent Colonel Steinberger, that too is not in Wikipedia History, but is in other references online and in The Library of Congress"
"What was interesting was the way the US. Navy presence and American Representation were portrayed, as invaders. Wikipedia misleads the readers into a White American vs Samoan History, portraying a Colonial type of history. These types of summary were not in the USA before the 1990s and have appeared with Neo-Anglo politics"
Mishandling and Resolve 1950's
In the 1950-60s agreements made between the USA and Eastern Samoa were revised in more detail and organized through US. Departments so that there wouldn't be mishandling of future relations. Political parties in the USA campaign candidates and change administration. The United States moved all dealings and power under the Department of Interior so that issues with Trust regions couldn't be burdened upon by new US. administration changes.
