Between 1855 and 1914, Britain and Germany fought to be the major European presence in Western Samoa. The US. Americans had established strong ties with Eastern Samoa in 1839, furthered in 1872 by The President of The United States. In 1899, Britain was forced to retreat from Western Samoa and sign The Tripartite Convention Treaty 1899 saying that interests, dealing, and claims were forfeit. In 1914 The British used a New Zealand proxy force to attack an unguarded German Radio Station in Samoa, thus breaking 1899 agreements, which in turn started The First World War in the Pacific.
